Physio-led Pilates for Lower Back Pain Course

Thursdays at 5.15pm with Eleni – Starting 23rd March.

Low back pain is common and can have any number of causes. In fact, back pain is the largest single cause of disability in the UK, with lower back pain alone accounting for 11% of the total disability of the UK population. NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) recommends that people with persistent non-specific low back pain should be encouraged to stay physically active and exercise. This course gives back pain sufferers with the right techniques to relieve and protect themselves from chronic back pain.

Health experts say chronic back pain is made worse by our increasingly sedentary lifestyle, with the average Briton spending almost four hours a day at a computer. The figures, released by the UK Statistics Authority, reveal the shocking extent of the nation’s back pain problem.

Around 4.2 million working days were lost by workers aged 50-64 alone in 2014.

The course

The back pain course consists of a one-on-one session with a physio to assess the specific cause of your pain, muscle imbalances and postural problems.  From here, if it is safe, you can join the 6-week course. If you are happy, you can continue to attend as long as you like!

Who can come?

If you have been struggling with lower back pain for a long time, or with those niggles and aches that don’t seem to go away, come along! If you are struggling with postural deformities such as scoliosis, hyperlordosis, and stiffness or too much movement in your back, you are also welcome to join in. If your Doctor has cleared it for you to start Pilates, you can sign up for your one-to-one 45-minute session today.

The aim

The aim of this class is to strengthen the muscles that improve your posture and take pressure off your back that can be caused by static daily positions (such as sitting at that computer all day!) or repetitive daily movements. Simply put, to get moving naturally again!

The mind-body connection is key, and retraining your body to move normally and naturally again is extremely important when you are suffering from pain. This will be addressed in the classes by doing flowing, repetitive movements to retrain muscle memory. Also, we will use small equipment to try and assist or make an exercise more challenging for your level.

Eleni Tsafandakis MCSP

Eleni is a Physiotherapist working in Brighton and received her B.Sc Honours in Physiotherapy in South Africa in 2014. Eleni first realised how important strengthening and posture is for people with chronic lower back pain when working in the musculoskeletal field.   It was here where she noticed how beneficial Pilates can be for injury prevention and maintenance in her patients.

Her special interest fields include Pilates for chronic pain issues and for runners. Eleni is a strong believer in the use of exercise and specific strengthening to improve pain and quality of life. She has been doing her Pilates training through the Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute and will continue her training through regular professional development courses and exams
